The Arun week: 1 to 7 March

4 March: A damp and chilly morning dog walk by the Arun to the east and north of Arundel yielded two  Reed Buntings, a Bullfinch, a singing Cetti's Warbler and a Yellowhammer. 3 March: Early to mid afternoon in Arundel Park yielded three Hawfinches, one Bullfinch, two Kestrels and a calling Tawny Owl. This was followed by brief visits to Swanbourne Lake, where there were two vociferous Little Grebes, and WWT, where there were 47 Lapwings, 10 Snipe, two Oystercatchers, two Shelduck and six Shovelers. Concluded with an hour and a half scan from the river end of the Millstream, which produced a female Hen Harrier, Marsh Harrier, three Red Kites, four Buzzards, a Peregrine, at least one Barn Owl, calling Water Rail, three Little Egrets and at least seven Reed Buntings flying into WWT to roost. 3 March: The morning dog walk by the Arun to the east and north of Arundel yielded four Stonechats, five Reed Buntings, a Firecrest, a singing Cetti's Warbler and a singing Yellowhammer. 2

The Arun week: 17 to 23 Feb

23 Feb: WWT and a scan of the river from the east end of the  Millstream in the afternoon was very productive, with a male Merlin, ringtail Hen Harrier, at least 9 Marsh Harriers, 6 Little Egrets, 2 Kingfishers, 1 Firecrest, 1 Grey Wagtail, 9 Shelduck, 6 Shoveler, 11 Snipe, 64 Lapwings, 2 Oystercatchers, 1 Barn Owl and 3 calling Tawny Owls. 20 Feb: The Klondike, river and Millstream route on a windy, grey morning: 1 Cattle Egret, 4 Little Egrets, 1 Water Rail, 1 Treecreeper. 19 Feb: A Lesser Spotted Woodpecker calling at a site in the area around Arundel in the morning. 18 Feb: Bright, dry morning in the Waterwoods: 1 Firecrest, 1 Goldcrest, 2 Marsh Tits, 3 Coal Tits, 4 Meadow Pipits, 2 Little Grebe, 1 Mandarin, 2 Buzzards, 1 Kestrel. 17 Feb: To Klondike, Offham and WWT on an afternoon of showers and colder weather: 6 Bewick's Swans, 1 Red Kite, 1 Buzzard, 1 Kestrel, 1 Stonechat, 2 Kingfishers, 12 Shelduck, 10 Pochard, 5 Shoveler, 1 Wigeon.

The Arun week: 10 to 16 Feb

16 Feb:  Another morning walk along the Klondike, river and Millstream paths, with less rain and wind than had been threatened by Storm Dennis: The Kingfisher still along the Klondike path and Reed Bunting by the river, with a Cattle Egret and Bullfinch also from the  Klondike. 15 Feb: A morning walk along the Klondike, river and Millstream paths, mild but with increasing wind ahead of Storm Dennis, was less productive than two days back: A Kingfisher still along the Klondike path, a single Redwing, and a male Reed Bunting in full song on the most exposed stretch of the river path were the highlights. 14 Feb: Morning in the Waterwoods: 2 Firecrests, 1 Goldcrest, 1 Marsh Tit, 2 Coal Tits. 13 Feb: A morning walk along the Klondike, river and Millstream paths, and characterised by occasional heavy rain showers, was more productive than expected: 1 Cattle Egret, 2 Little Egrets, 1 Kingfisher, 2 Oystercatchers, 2 Lapwings and 2 Water Rails. The Arun week: 3 to 9 Feb

Feb 8: Mild after rain but with a breeze developing in the afternoon with morning and afternoon sessions in woodland including Water, Screens, Sherwood Rough and Dalesdown: 2 Firecrests, 4 Goldcrests, 1 Marsh Tit, 2 Bullfinches, 7 Buzzards, 3 Kestrels, and 4 Mandarin. Feb 7: Cold, with frost and mist by the river east and north of Arundel: 1 Peregrine, 2 Reed Buntings, Chaffinches and Nuthatches in song along the Mill Road. Feb 6: Mist obscuring the river south of Arundel this morning reduced the species count, with 9 Snipe, 8 Skylarks and 4 Reed Buntings the highlights. Feb 4: Afternoon look at the Black Rabbit field, Offham, and WWT produced an electrifying ten minutes of activity at 1.55pm at the Black Rabbit field, with a Barn Owl, Marsh Harrier, 3 Red Kites, Kestrel and ringtail Hen Harrier appearing in rapid succession. The Arun week: 27 Jan to 2 Feb

Feb 2: Southern part of Arundel Park and Swanbourne Lake in the morning, stretch from Hiorne Tower to Duchess Lodge in the afternoon: A Hawfinch sat out briefly in the afternoon, either on route to Sherwood Rough or roosting in the Park near Duchess Lodge. A flock of up to 130 mainly Fieldfare with a few Redwing both morning and afternoon.  Feb 1: Waterwoods on a fine, mild morning and Sherwood Rough and vicinity on a breezier, cloudier afternoon: 1 Firecrest, 1 Marsh Tit, 28 Meadow Pipits, 1 Kingfisher in Waterwoods; 1 Crossbill, 3 Bullfinches, 4 Linnets, 1 Marsh Tit, 1 Treecreeper but no Hawfinches at Sherwood Rough. Jan 30: Swanbourne Lake and WWT on a dry but misty afternoon, with most of the action at the Wetland Centre. At the lake 1 Chiffchaff and 17 Pochard. At WWT another 3 Pochard, indicating 20 overall, plus 1 Fieldfare, 2 Firecrest, 1 Treecreeper, 1 Water Rail, 2 Wigeon, 10 Shoveler, 6 Shelduck. 19 Jan: A damp and grey morning by the Arun south of Arundel: 1 Green Sandpiper, 1 Stonechat and 1 Peregrine. 18 Jan: Afternoon trek from Littlehampton to Arundel by the river: 1 Short-eared Owl, 2 Marsh Harrier, 1 Peregrine, 6 Common Sandpiper, 3 Oystercatcher, 12 Redshank, 120 Lapwing, 1 Stonechat and 1 Kingfisher. 17 Jan: Morning along the river east and north of Arundel, with 1 Firecrest and 1 Red Kite.
