The Arun week: 25 May to 1 June

A Honey-buzzard over Arundel being harried by a Buzzard and then a pair of Ravens was one of the high points of the week. Another was a Nightjar present at a traditional site on May 27 -- although this date was over a fortnight later than their arrival in 2018, when at least three birds were present. A spurt of late activity after a very subdued spring wader passage came in the form of a Dunlin and a Ringed Plover by the Arun to the south of Arundel. Otherwise the main interest was breeding activity, with Swanbourne hosting two broods of Gadwall and one of Mandarin, another Mandarin brood in the Waterwoods and one of the local Barn Owl pairs with at least two young in their nest.
