The Arun week: 13 to 19 January

19 Jan: A damp and grey morning by the Arun south of Arundel: 1 Green Sandpiper, 1 Stonechat and 1 Peregrine. 18 Jan: Afternoon trek from Littlehampton to Arundel by the river: 1 Short-eared Owl, 2 Marsh Harrier, 1 Peregrine, 6 Common Sandpiper, 3 Oystercatcher, 12 Redshank, 120 Lapwing, 1 Stonechat and 1 Kingfisher. 17 Jan: Morning along the river east and north of Arundel, with 1 Firecrest and 1 Red Kite.

The Arun week: 6 to 12 January

12 Jan: An afternoon visit to Arundel Park produced 3 Hawfinch, 3 Marsh Tit, 35 Yellowhammer and a Bullfinch. 10 Jan: Dawn by the Black Rabbit and 2 Barn Owls active and 4 Tawny Owls calling. Later in the morning by the Arun south of Arundel 1 Merlin, 2 Marsh Harrier, 130 Wigeon, 2 Grey Partridge and 7 Snipe. 9 Jan: Late afternoon at WWT with 4 Marsh Harrier into roost, 1 Sparrowhawk, a Cetti's Warbler, and 4 Tawny Owls calling on the way back. 8 Jan: Morning in the Waterwoods with 1 Firecrest and 2 Marsh Tit. 6 Jan: Walk from the Black Rabbit to Offham produced 3 Bewick's Swan and a Kingfisher.

The Arun Week: 1 to 5 Jan

Jan 5: The river south of Arundel produced 180 Fieldfare, 1 Common Sandpiper and 2 Black Swan. Jan 4:  The river east and north of Arundel again, producing little apart from an Egyptian Goose, 9 Meadow Pipit and 4 Reed Bunting. Jan 2:  The river route east and north of Arundel was again grey and windless in the morning but produced a male Merlin, 1 Marsh Harrier, 1 Kingfisher, 6 Redwing, 1 Stonechat, 2 Treecreeper, 6 Siskin and 2 Bullfinch. The latter are very active and visible at present. A brief afternoon visit to Swanbourne Lake produced 96 Gadwall, 8 Pochard and 2 Mandarin, while an even briefer visit to the Wetland Centre yielded one Cattle Egret, at least one calling Water Rail, at least 10 Marsh Harrier and at least one ringtail Hen Harrier. Jan 1: A dull but windless afternoon at Sherwood Rough and Rewell Wood from 12.30-16.00 yielded 3 Hawfinch at the usual roost site as well as 1 Woodcock, 19 Snipe, 1 Firecrest, 3 Marsh Tit and 4 Bullfinch.
